Tenants' Rights

As a tenant it is vital to know and understand the rights you have and how to use them. Of course every rental property business participated by landlord and tenant. Knowing your rights as a tenant can lead you to recognize different legal actions to take for every tough situation you might overcome along while renting. It’s also a must for you to know if you are held responsible about something. You have to be acquainted with how to protect certain rights as a tenant and where to find helpful tips to enhance them.

Federal law prohibits discrimination on the basis of:

- Race
- Sex
- Religion
- Color
- Age
- National origin
- Physical disability
- Mental disability (including alcoholism and past drug addiction)
- Familial status (including not allowing children, discrimination against pregnant women)

As a tenant, you have the right to adequate living facilities such as hot and cold water, heating, electricity, ventilation, toilet facilities and a drainage system. It is your right not to be harassed.

A landlord cannot end a tenancy for a discriminatory reason. Claiming your rights is of course based on the legal arrangement made between you and your landlord. You better keep in mind to make proper dealing with your landlords. Communicate with your landlord just try to solve problems first with a simple conversation before issues escalate into ugly disputes.

Anyway there are some helpful tips out there on how to protect your rights. Some of them are by getting renter's insurance. Renter's insurance is relatively cheap and will protect you where your landlord's insurance won't and do your paper work. Most of all protect your self.
